It is a woodland setting. One hears creatures out of sight (birds and insects). A number of people are sitting around a fire.
If I scan downwards sideways or up I find mysel f in midair, but an illusion of space is maintained inside the box due to the backdrops on the sides.
all in all a very effective illusion.
I rather imagine I would smell the fire and typical background odors of a forest at night...

Hi, we did build a 'classroom' for EdTech 531 "Teaching and Learning in Virtual Worlds" or rather it evolved throughout the class. It's full of interesting stuff. There's also a Tropical Sound Garden that I built on the island. Just ask me for the landmarks.

"We participate, therefore, we are" Dewey
The socio-cultural theory emphasizes that learning occurs within context and interlocutors' understanding is socially constructed. That is to say that a student does not construct knowledge in his/her own. Social networks make simulation that encourages students to interact and work collaboratively. Before the exiting of social networks, students used to interact face-to-face only while they were in classrooms or on campus. However, nowadays students can interact and collaborate with other students from all over the worlds and for a long time. That will facilitate learning and constructing knowledge.

Rowan and I visited two small islands. We found some creatures such as anteaters and a wrecked boat. We also heard sounds of gulls, breakers, monkeys' chattering and bells. Rowan and I talked about the influence of one's background and environment on his/her feelings when visiting a new place. We agreed that one's environment effectively affects the way he/she perceives things in the new place and he/she will feel more connected to things that he/she is more familiar with or available in his/her original environment.

An excellent resource for educators as its quiet and comfortable. There is are aire of the wild, seemly a place of calm, although one attending has a desire to explore. Others are chatting off in the distance as well as wind in the trees with birds singing their soothing sounds. What I enjoy the most while visiting the Skybox, is the chance to focus on what chores are at hand, at least for the day. The Skybox offers its visitors the best of tools for study and concentration and these seem to be: a peaceful unchallenging place to study or work on research as well as the best of virtual effects to coax the senses into a realm of inner thought. I congratulate the owners and designers of this wonderful spot.

I was able to look around EDTECH Island and got a sense how it works. I am still a bit uncomfortable with the use of Second Life, mainly because I had no direction to begin with since I had missed the 1st meeting on EDTECH Island. I began with editing the appearance of my character and found that to be quite user friendly. I also flew around the island to get an aerial view. I found a few people around but didn't get a chance to interact. I look forward to learning and trying out other features of Second Life.

Check your Inventory/Library/Landmarks. There should be some Orientation links there to help you get more comfortable. Just ignore the immature avatars that abound in those places. Search/Visit ISTE and NCI Join their groups and you will have instant help via IM. Both offer orientation and growth classes as well as offering more free resources than you have time for. I am Josain Zsun in SL. Although a relative newbie, I would be happy to give you what I've gained. I've been a digital pioneer for decades and almost as comfortable as today's generation of digital natives. Budd
P.S. Second Life for Dummies was just released and available at Amazon.
